Backpackers Guide

by: Derek Lakes

You will meet amazing people from all walks of life, learn a lot about yourself and make memories that will last forever, but whilst the most important thing to do is enjoy yourself you also need use your common sense and be prepared. A little forward planning could save you a lot of time, money and hassle.

Safety Travelling alone is probably more rewarding than going with friends, but make sure you let people know where you are. This isn't always possible down to exact location, but the general area or region means that if you are uncontactable for a few days, rescue services at least have a starting point.

Make your travelling companions, tour guide etc aware of any allergies you have and if you start to feel even slightly ill, give them a heads up. It may seem unimportant to you, but malaria and other tropical diseases often start out feeling like a cold.

Don't flash your camera, phone, MP3 player etc around. If you want to truly feel like a backpacker, you will need to fit in and this includes looking like the locals. This includes learning a little of the local language and customs. Also, don't walk about with a guide book because it will make you look like you have just stepped off the plane.

Practical information:

Money wise, the best thing to carry is US Dollars. Obviously you'll have local currency as well, but if you ever get into difficulty particularly in countries in Africa, Asia and South America, US currency will get you a lot further than anything else.

Photocopy your passport and keep it somewhere completely separate from your actual passport. If you do lose your passport or it gets stolen it's much easier and quicker to get a replacement if you have a photocopy with you.

If you are going to be in one country for a while, then buy a local pay as you go sim card. This means that mum and dad can call you and you won't have to foot the bill plus phone cards can also be used from these phones in many countries too. It also makes calling and texting your new friends a lot cheaper. Make sure before you leave the UK that your phone has been unlocked.

Install Skype on your home computer before you leave as many internet cafes in hostels, particularly in Australia and New Zealand now have this facility meaning you can call home completely free.

Planning:

The best and cheapest way to see as much of the world as possible is to buy a round the world flight ticket. These are also some of the most flexible tickets you can buy where changing dates and flight routes will only set you back a minimal charge.

Some things are best done locally. This not only helps support local communities in the countries that need it most, but you can also save your money and retain much more flexibility. This is applicable to tours, transport and accommodation, but also to things like toiletries. Shampoo, deodorant, sun cream etc are heavy, and rather costly in the UK. So save luggage space as well as your hard-earned cash by buying them when you arrive. I'm sure you've heard stories about luggage being lost for days, so in case this happens to you, and with the amount of flying you are going to be doing the probably is greatly increased, keep a spare change of clothes and any medical supplies in your hand luggage.

Cruising. A Wonderful Vacation Choice

by: Marlene Challis

Is there anything more luxurious than taking a cruise holiday? Travelling to exotic locations on a luxury ship, catching some sun and breathing in the sea breezes, can renew and revitalise anyone, no matter how weary you are from working.

Cruise travel is much more than just a way to get from one location to the next. It used to be that the only reason to get on board a ship, was to get from one destination to another. Today they are much more than just a means of transport. They offer much more than that.

In fact, today, the cruises that are available are designed just for you and others like you. With so many ships and destinations to choose from, you may actually have more difficulty choosing just one rather than finding any that fit your needs.

I have been on the Superstar Gemini. It was one of the best holidays that I have had. Once on the ship, you unpack and that is it until you return. You travel from country to country, with no worries about passports etc. It is very relaxing.

The ships have a multitude of activities to suit everyone but you don't have to do anything if that is what you want. While on the Gemini, I met people that had been on the ship 10 times before. They just stay on the ship now and don't get off to go ashore.

My ultimate cruise is to go on "The World". I would love to combine my love of cruising with my love of world travel and stopping off at all of the major places in the world to see. If anyone out there could arrange that, so that I could have a prominent section about it on my website, please let me know.

One of the best benefits of the cruises that are available today, is that many of them offer you the ability to find the right location and the right group of people to travel with.

Here are a few of the various cruise themes that you can find.

**Families and children. In an effort to get more young families to travel on a cruise vacation, many of the childrens favorite theme parks and characters now sponsor cruises. You can find a wide range of Disney themed cruises as well as those for Nickelodeon and many others. Of course, many of the luxury liners also offer childrens specific activities, but when you are a young family, a themed childs vacation may be the ideal way to go.

**Singles. Here is another option for those that are looking to get something out of their cruise. If you would love to take a cruise but do not have someone to go with, why not go alone? You may meet a soul mate on board or at least you can have lots of fun looking for them.

Seniors. For those that would rather leave the grand children at home, there are plenty of options for older people on a cruise. These are more laid back and much less child oriented cruises. They are designed for those that would like to try something new or visit another culture. You will find a wide range of choices in them.

There are many more cruise options for you. Consider any and all of them to find the one that fits your needs the best.

There are plenty of reasons why you should take a cruise. If you are like most people, you will enjoy getting away from it all. A cruise will allow you to do just that. In fact, you do not have to worry about getting to all the places you want to visit in time. There is no rushing around. There are plenty of reasons to use cruise travel as your main way to spend your vacation.

Here are some reasons why you may want to consider this type of vacation.

**It is affordable. There are plenty of deals happening each and every day, virtually all times of the year. You can find a wide range of discounts available in the off seasons, but there are plenty to go around any time of the year. Most of the time, you will spend less on a cruise than you will on a big vacation.

**There is plenty to see. When you take a cruise, you can travel to a wide range of places around the world. You can experience a wide range of different cultures. There is also plenty for you to experience on the actual ship as well.

**You can meet lots of new people. A cruise is a great place to meet a wide range of people. You do not even need to get off the ship to do so either. There are many people that are ready and waiting for you to meet them. You can meet people your own age or meet someone with the same interest.

**You can do new things. On the ship and off, there are many things that you can do to enjoy the time that you have. You can learn to rock climb or go scuba diving. You can learn to water ski or go fishing in the ocean. There is no limit to the options that you have.

Cruise travel has many rewards to offer those that are looking for something a little more relaxed or something that is a bit different. Check out the various options that are available because not only can you do the things that you would like to do, but you can find a wide range of options to choose from to fit your needs and lifestyle.

If you are worried about what there is to do on your cruise ship, you may not have anything to worry about at all. Unlike your long flight on an airplane to your destination, you are going to find many things to do on your ship.

In fact, some say that the best part of their vacation is the ship itself and not the destination at all. One thing is for sure. If you book a great cruise, you will enjoy all the relaxation that you can get.

There are plenty of things to keep you busy on board the ship. If you are looking for something to do, consider the options that are available to you.

Here are just a few.

**If you are traveling with children, this may be one of your biggest worries. Will the kids have something to do? First off, make sure that you book a cruise that is geared towards kids and families as this will allow for more to do in the long run. Nevertheless, there are plenty of options. Many of the cruises will offer all sorts of activities from games and swimming to learning adventures and lots of play time. Most have plenty of activities to keep the kids happy.

**If you are into sports, there are plenty of options here as well. Your cruise may be ideal for swimming and working out as most of them feature a wide range of options. They generally have many things set up for you including a swimming pool, exercise room, games on deck, events and then when you get to your destination, you have more. You can often go snorkeling and deep sea diving. You can go water skiing and even consider going rock climbing. Look at what your cruise has to offer.

**Entertainment is the key to a great cruise and you will find plenty of this available as well. If you are going to enjoy your cruise, make sure that the types of entertainment that you enjoy are there. This will include shows, musicals, comedy, movies and parties. Dining options are always amazing and include everything from casual dining to 5 star restaurants. I remember the captains dinner and all of the waiters coming out with the desserts on fire. Very spectacular!

Before booking your cruise, make sure the ship has what you are looking for.

There are plenty of cruise destinations out there. You can go to Mexico or South America. You can visit Asia or even Europe and Africa. The beautiful Pacific Islands. What about Alaska or the Antarctic.

The world is full of possibilities when it comes to a cruise.

You can go virtually any place that you would like to on a cruise. I highly recommend a cruise vacation. It is a very relaxing way to travel.

Uncover Secrets Today to Choosing the Best Spanish Language Course For You.

by: Alan Benney

If you are planning to take up Spanish as a second language, then I would encourage you to read this article in its entirety before you choose the course for you, avoid the mistakes that many people make when selecting a Spanish course.

Numerous people often get bewildered when making a reference to the Spanish language. It is a fact that the language is spoken in five different continents world wide for example; Europe, Carribean, North America, Central America, and parts of Africa, in fact next to the English, arguably it is the second most spoken language world wide.

If you are a novice and just starting out as a Spanish student, then it really depends where you are located in the world to which Spanish course you to need study, for example; if you live in Mexico or planning to move there, then you need to learn Mexican Spanish which is quite different to the Spanish spoken in Spain.

A few years previous as I love travelling holidays, I was l fortunate enough to encounter a months trip to Spain, I converse a little in Spanish not fluent by any means but, adequate to survive.

I started in the north and journeyed around the coast of Spain heading south, the first place I stopped off was around the Pyrenees area, this is where I discovered the different interpretations of the Spanish language.

It really was rather entertaining for them when I endeavoured to exchange a few words with them, and the explanation is in the north of Spain they converse in a combination of Spanish, and French, which is referred to as Catalan.

Previous to this trip I felt pretty confident with regard to my use of the language, however, this was reduced quite considerably very quickly, and soon realised they did not understand a certain words and phrases. The bewildered looks and expressions really made me grin, and they also after a time saw the humorous side, that's the impressive thing about learning Spanish in Spain, they are very accommodating when they distinguish the fact you are making an effort, plus in general a kind and welcoming country.

Nevertheless, it was a huge lesson to gain knowledge of, that in order to become skilled at any language you have to sometimes step out of your comfort zone and be ready to jump in at the deep end.

On my trip I made an effort to stop off at many small villages on my journey, and each little place I stayed there were many different interpretations of the Spanish phrases.

A logical illustration of various ways to utilize languages would be, to evaluate the English language spoken in Cornwall in the UK to Scotland, and as a rule individuals would be in agreement there is a immeasurable variation; in actuality there are branches of Scotland, which are quite excessive and can be complicated to identify with even if you are fluent in English.

The statement I am trying to create is, that if you are learning to converse in Spanish to decide on the appropriate course for your locality you intend to use it in is crucial. So if you are travelling to Mexico then give rise to the fact to find a programme that covers Mexican Spanish.

Further more if you are looking to accelerate your progress a hot tip is to befriend Puerto Ricans, or Colombians, Ecuadorians, if possible they have a full understanding of Mexican Spanish.

Specialists in the world of verbal communication are very adamant that it is essential to be trained to speak Spanish in a conversational way, for instance; the every day conversations we use when we go shopping, what ever you say in English, try to think how you would say that in Spanish this is very effective way of learning.

I hope this article has opened your eyes to the different interpretations of the Spanish language and helped you to choose the right course for your needs.

Taking a Gap Year

by: Lalit Rastogi

For both students and people in work, the option for taking a gap year is proving to be a very popular life choice. Making the decision to take a gap year and following it through can be difficult to achieve. For a student taking a gap year before or after taking a university degree, a gap year can have a huge positive effect in terms of boosting confidence, increasing maturity, developing social skills, gaining experience and knowledge of different cultures, helping the environment and feeling independent by taking the opportunity of working in a different country.

For a student or individual with no financial or family commitments, a gap year can seem like the perfect way to experience life before joining or returning to the world of work. However, like many things in life, there are major hurdles to overcome. Firstly there is the question of financing the gap year. If a person is lucky enough to have funds available or will be working during their gap year, this poses very few problems. For many people who are hoping to travel during their gap year, it may mean taking a temporary job or asking parents to help out financially. With student debts at an all time high, gaining the necessary funds can prove to be very difficult and delays may be inevitable.

The second hurdle to overcome is the fear and excitement of travelling to the far corners of the world and surviving to tell the tale especially for those travelling solo for the first time. Parents, friends and family will also be very worried with stories of crime, natural disasters, unstable governments and disease ridden areas making the news on a daily basis. In the vast majority of cases, most countries are just as safe as your home country. With the wealth of information available on the internet and through travel guides, there is no excuse not to plan a trip beforehand in order to make the most of it and to avoid unnecessary risks and dangers. Many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America have well laid out backpacker routes which are used by thousands of men and women travelling in groups or on their own. The vast majority have amazing experiences and return home safely. You will be hard pressed to find an individual who has taken a gap year and regretted the decision.

For some, travelling solo may pose a major problem if they have never tried it before. They may be worried about feeling lonely and unable to cope with situations by themselves in a strange country far from home. Fortunately there are thousands of people in exactly the same situation and travelling solo is the ideal way to meet people and build confidence. People often meet in hostels, bars, trains, airports and the list goes on. It is much easier to meet people while travelling than it is in your home country and in most cases, people will only be alone if they choose to be. Also the ability to cope with new situations will improve over a short period of time as you gain confidence through each experience. After a while, you will be booking accommodation on the internet, travelling long distances and communicating with people in a different language without a second thought.

The options for people taking a gap year are huge and include travel, volunteer work, contract work, seasonal jobs, adventure travel, teaching English and much more. For further information, visit http://www.firstgapyear.com. A gap year can be a once in a life time experience and as long as you plan well and use your common sense, it can be year that will change your life for the better.
